An Invitation from the solstice

by Michele Fawcett-Long, Career True North

In many traditions, December is a holiday month, and it’s easy to feel overburdened and harried. Even during the pandemic, there can be a lot to do to prepare for celebrations, gift-giving, and connecting with family and friends (even if it’s Zoom!).

For those of us in the northern hemisphere, December is also the month of the winter solstice. In far-north Seattle, our days are short and dim. The December sun travels low over the horizon, and I love the watery, slanting light. In the natural world, this part of the year is a time of quiet and rest and burrowing underground.

This December I’m savoring the solstice time. I feel a call to move inward, to hibernate, and to relish what is dark and underground, both inside and out. Despite the tasks of the holiday season, I’m finding time to let my inner world to be fallow.

Here’s an invitation from the solstice to you, to anyone wishing for a new start ~

Let this dark season allow you a slower time and quieter space.

In this quiet spaciousness, let the seeds of your change, slumbering underground, start to dream.

And let these dreams be the beginning of your evolution toward a more authentically lived life.

The light will return, but until then, let yourself follow the call of the dark and dreaming season.

Amitiés.
